The referee ignored Symba's protests and gave Tacettin Umay a yellow card for diving instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristian Sancho in the 23rd minute of play forced Symba's goalkeeper Anis Achour to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Ecuador's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Daniel Zorita in the 32nd minute. The corner went over the outstretched arms of Symba's goalie and right to Luis Andino. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. Symba's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. In the 35th minute Sílvio Veiga shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After having played for 39 minutes, Cristian Sancho managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Cristian Sancho was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 39 minutes into the match, Symba's goal looked a bit too open when Agustín Saelices came free, but Anis Achour reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a rather tough play, Symba's Gus Wootton got a free kick in the 41st minute. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sílvio Veiga in the 43rd minute of play. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

In the 69th match minute, Symba was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Tacettin Umay to maneuver through the defense. After 71 played minutes Ecuador got a freekick which was hit by Agustín Saelices. 71 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Sílvio Veiga came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The long shot by Daniel Zorita in the 76th minute really tested Anis Achour's skills. The ball was on its way into the goal to the left of him when he managed to stretch himself and save the shot and avoid a goal. Orlando Queirós's late challenge caught a Ecuador's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Orlando Queirós helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to Symba getting a freekick after 80 minutes play.
