Mexico's Dante Lacasa proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 13th minute of the match, managed to save Mexico from getting a goal against them. An unexpectedly hard shot by Donato Venerando in the 21st minute of play forced Mexico's goalkeeper Dante Lacasa to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Alberto Tafalla had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 25th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. 25 minutes into the match, Ardiles's goal looked a bit too open when Alberto Tafalla came free, but Erik Kassentoft reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Alfonso Astudillo's late challenge caught a Mexico's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Alfonso Astudillo helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Ardiles's Alfonso Astudillo got a free kick in the 92nd minute. Alfonso Astudillo hit a great freekick 93 minutes into the match. When Joel Gaona came up free with the goalie in the 96th minute, the Mexico fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Joel Gaona couldn't finish the play. Mexico's fans were overjoyed with their teams well-earned victory and stayed in the stadium long after the final whistle to celebrate the win.
