After the first half Ecuador were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The wind increased when Maicon Arruda made the kick off in the second half. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jonas Dracena in the 52nd minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 53rd minute America FC were awarded a corner. Jonas Dracena went to the cornerflag to take it. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cristian Sancho got free with Gildo Furtado in the 57th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. When Daniel Zorita came up free with the goalie in the 66th minute, the Ecuador fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Daniel Zorita couldn't finish the play.
