Vergil Rupov's late challenge caught a Ecuador's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Vergil Rupov helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Genk's Vergil Rupov got a free kick in the 5th minute. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Rain De Hond in the 8th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Julio Vera saved Ecuador from getting behind. Antonio Arias hit a great freekick 43 minutes into the match. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alfons Rijniers in the 44th minute of play. Genk made a substitution. Thomas-Jan Van de Weijer replaced Tony Mampaerts.
