When the match clock showed 3 minutes, the score became 0-1 when Cassius Byrne sped through Gremio Viana's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Samuel Fiúza. Samuel Fiúza showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Edward Mcdonald in the 10th minute of the match. In the 20th minute, Cassius Byrne left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The USA fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-2. 24 minutes into the match, USA's goalkeeper Marco Day had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Joaquim Paredes. After some careless play in the Gremio Viana defense, Cassius Byrne kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Samuel Fiúza. The Gremio Viana fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Samuel Fiúza should have stopped the shot. Joaquim Paredes sent away a hard shot on goal in the 36th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. The audience thought a goal was coming when Joaquim Paredes got free with Marco Day in the 36th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. USA's Edward Mcdonald got a good chance for a goal in the 37th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cassius Byrne in the 39th minute of play forced Gremio Viana's goalkeeper Samuel Fiúza to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After the first half USA were leading 0-4. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Cassius Byrne was the one to do the kick off. Gremio Viana's Severino Torcato quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Jenson Smith, made in the 52nd minute of the game. Thanks to some nice moves Cassius Byrne could shoot a difficult shot in the 55th minute, which Samuel Fiúza however easily saved by the left post. Edward Mcdonald who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 59thth minute tested the skills of Samuel Fiúza when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Samuel Fiúza made a fantastic save in the 62nd minute, when Cassius Byrne sent off a good shot on target. An unexpectedly hard shot by Monty Rogers in the 65th minute of play forced Gremio Viana's goalkeeper Samuel Fiúza to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Sam Campbells short, quick shot in the 72ndth minute got Samuel Fiúza to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. Gremio Viana made a substitution. Mohamed Ali Bomba replaced Severino Torcato. Marco Day showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Carlos Luna in the 75th minute of the match. Samuel Fiúza showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Monty Rogers, who was totally free with the ball in the 78th minute. In the 81stth minute of the game Monty Rogers who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Gremio Viana's Samuel Fiúza was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Carlos Luna struck a weak shot in the 83rd minute. Marco Day didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Gremio Viana. USA's Khalid Parry was substituted for Monty Rogers. Samuel Fiúza showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Khalid Parry, who was totally free with the ball in the 87th minute. When Carlos Luna came up free with the goalie in the 92nd minute, the Gremio Viana fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Carlos Luna couldn't finish the play. Mohamed Ali Bomba kicked well hit freekick during the 93rd minute of the match.
