After a defensive mix-up in LUIZ PANATO's zone, Abraham Alguacil stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Guto Taffarel came out of the goal and Abraham Alguacil tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Tomas Berganza in the 15th minute of play forced LUIZ PANATO's goalkeeper Guto Taffarel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Arlindo de Salles could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 19th minute of the match, but Marcos Cotilla made a huge save. Panama's Marcos Cotilla played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Aki Guardo in the 20th minute of play. Abraham Alguacil struck a weak shot in the 21st minute. Guto Taffarel didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Panama. Marcos Cotilla was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Marcos Cotilla showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Aki Guardo, who was totally free with the ball in the 43rd minute. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.
