The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Bernhard Krier during the 12th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The supporters of Vanderslaike FC booed when Saint Etienne was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Bernhard Krier didn't get a good kick on the ball. Jonas Majerus received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 18th minute. Anier Sayvion tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Oswaldo Perez's late challenge caught a Saint Etienne's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Oswaldo Perez helped the player get up and apologised. Naldo Fonseca might have been able to make a better finish in the 25th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Gregory Hildmann. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Naldo Fonseca ran back to his position shaking his head. 35 minutes into the match, Saint Etienne's goal looked a bit too open when Naldo Fonseca came free, but Gregory Hildmann reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 41st minute, Oswaldo Perez hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Gregory Hildmann showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Naldo Fonseca, who was totally free with the ball in the 44th minute. After a rather tough play, Saint Etienne's Bernhard Krier got a free kick in the 45th minute. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. After some careless play in the Saint Etienne defense, Naldo Fonseca kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Gregory Hildmann. The Saint Etienne fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Gregory Hildmann should have stopped the shot. Lutz Schlaustein hit a great freekick 67 minutes into the match. In the 67th minute of the match Naldo Fonseca shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Gregory Hildmann showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Gregory Hildmann came out of the goal in the 70th minute to try and stop a shot by Vanderslaike FC's Naldo Fonseca. But to his dismay, Naldo Fonseca quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-2. Gregory Hildmann made an important save on a dangerous shot by Naldo Fonseca in the 80th minute. 84 minutes into the match, Vanderslaike FC's goal looked a bit too open when Bernhard Krier came free, but Anier Sayvion reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Saint Etienne's attentive Raphaël Favre managed to snatch the ball when Marquinhos Mønster made a throw-in in the 89th minute of the game. Chants of Vanderslaike FC echoed around the stadium as the match drew to a close. Supporters and players were both delighted with the win, as Saint Etienne had held the ball for most of the match.
