Björn Vanek showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Juan Fernando Pratto, who was totally free with the ball in the 9th minute. In the 11th minute of the match Santa Fe got a corner. MEXICO's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Björn Vanek made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. The corner first didn't look so dangerous but when Steve Rogers got the ball he succeeded in some way to get through the defenders to deliver a very hard score. Result 0-2. 21 minutes into the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Americo Jon got free with Shao Jing Yuan in the 39th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Romulo Lalla's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Björn Vanek read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 41st minute of play. Santa Fe's Shao Jing Yuan played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Gaston Rosio in the 43rd minute of play. In the 45th minute of the match MEXICO got a corner. Santa Fe's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Honorato Gaitan ran over to the corner to take the kick. MEXICO's Honorato Gaitan was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Shao Jing Yuan in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. After the first half Santa Fe were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.
