In the 15th minute Tomas Illescas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Xorxe Viguera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 19 minutes into the game, Aleksandr Lemesh was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. FORTALEZA's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Venezuela the free kick. Jonathan Ferrant made an important save on a dangerous shot by Stoyo Kamenarski in the 29th minute. In the 31st minute, Dmitry Yakubovsky hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 32 minutes into the match, Venezuela's Tomas Illescas sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Xorxe Viguera narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The Venezuela fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Jonathan Ferrant should have stopped the shot. 47 minutes into the game, Tomas Illescas cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-1. Xorxe Viguera was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

After 89 played minutes FORTALEZA got a freekick which was hit by Aleksandr Lemesh. Tomas Illescas fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 92nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Xorxe Viguera having to interfere. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The FORTALEZA fans cheered their team off the field, for while Venezuela had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
