Alejandro Rufo might have been able to make a better finish in the 13th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Elvio Pacho. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Alejandro Rufo ran back to his position shaking his head. With his leg Óscar Cordoba managed to avoid a goal in the 15thth minute, when Cha Fe FC's Teobaldo Phelipe fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. In the 21st minute, Venancio Emesto left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Sporting de Gijón fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. 35 minutes into the match, Diego Maradona had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Elvio Pacho. Cha Fe FC's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Diego Maradona was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-2. The Cha Fe FC players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Sporting de Gijón were winning 0-3.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Teobaldo Phelipe stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The supporters of Sporting de Gijón booed when Cha Fe FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 57 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gogo Nuno didn't get a good kick on the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Teobaldo Phelipe in the 86th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Óscar Cordoba prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 87th minute Basilio Jusepe shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Óscar Cordoba saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 88 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goal looked a bit too open when Basilio Jusepe came free, but Óscar Cordoba reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Diego Maradona had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 90th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a rather tough play, Sporting de Gijón's Eustacio Loiola got a free kick in the 93rd minute. 96 minutes into the match, Teobaldo Phelipe notched a goal, 1-3, to the right of Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba. Óscar Cordoba was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Sporting de Gijón had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
