Atlético Montserrat's supporters rose to their feet, but Qu Sen Yan was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Óscar Cordoba breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 13th minute the ball was on its way in behind Atlético Montserrat's goalkeeper Jesus Luke, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 14th minute of the match Sporting de Gijón got a corner. Atlético Montserrat's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Saturnino Curcio ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Sporting de Gijón's Rune Fanström to fire away a dangerous shot which Jesus Luke despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Qu Sen Yan in the 18th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Óscar Cordoba saved Sporting de Gijón from getting behind. In the 20th minute, Rune Fanström hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 23rd match minute, Atlético Montserrat was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Anastasio Rito to maneuver through the defense. 25 minutes into the game, Anastasio Rito was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Atlético Montserrat's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Sporting de Gijón the free kick. In the 25th match minute, Atlético Montserrat was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Anastasio Rito to maneuver through the defense. After some careless play in the Sporting de Gijón defense, Michael Owen kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Óscar Cordoba. The Sporting de Gijón fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Óscar Cordoba should have stopped the shot. After a rather tough play, Atlético Montserrat's Bernardo Calvet got a free kick in the 31st minute. A very good chance for a goal. 34 minutes into the match, Atlético Montserrat's goalkeeper Jesus Luke had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Diego Maradona. Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by 崔光笑 in the 36th minute of play. When Atlético Montserrat's 崔光笑 in the 36th minute got a chance for a shot 36th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Sporting de Gijón's goalie prevented a goal. The corner led to Atlético Montserrat's Michael Owen getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Matias Bilintx was the one to do the kick off. Jesus Luke took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Diego Maradona, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Sporting de Gijón's Mario Zanabria was substituted for Alejandro Rufo. 69 minutes into the match, Atlético Montserrat's goal looked a bit too open when Diego Maradona came free, but Jesus Luke reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Óscar Cordoba made an important save on a dangerous shot by Michael Owen in the 76th minute. Jesus Luke showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Matias Bilintx, who was totally free with the ball in the 77th minute. A collision led to Atlético Montserrat getting a freekick after 91 minutes play. Salvador Orlanda hit a great ball. Matias Bilintx recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 95th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal.
