Vinny Junior recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 8th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After 11 played minutes Marquês de Herval got a freekick which was hit by Gaston Gonzalez. Dida Taffarel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Saturnino Curcio in the 14th minute of play. Dida Taffarel took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Matias Bilintx, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 21 minutes of play, Sporting de Gijón's Diego Maradona made it 0-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Dida Taffarel was left in no man's land by his defense there! The supporters of Marquês de Herval booed when Sporting de Gijón was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 23 match minutes in a wonderful position. Matias Bilintx didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 26th minute Alfredo Martins shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Óscar Cordoba saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Dida Taffarel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Diego Maradona in the 29th minute of play. 34 minutes into the match, Marquês de Herval's goal looked a bit too open when Diego Maradona came free, but Dida Taffarel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Dida Taffarel showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Matias Bilintx in the 36th minute of the match. In the 40th match minute, Sporting de Gijón was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Atilano Feo to maneuver through the defense. Marquês de Herval's Moussa Kabre got a good chance for a goal in the 41st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After the first half Sporting de Gijón were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Matias Bilintx to strike the kick off in the second half. The audience was convinced that Alfredo Martins's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Óscar Cordoba was relentless in the 53rd minute of the game. Óscar Cordoba made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Vinny Junior in the 55th minute of play. Matias Bilintx blasted a shot towards the goal in the 57th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Dida Taffarel having to make a save. 57 minutes into the match, Marquês de Herval's goal looked a bit too open when Matias Bilintx came free, but Dida Taffarel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alfredo Martins in the 60th minute of play. Jon Grøneng made in the 74th minute of the game a sloppy throw-in which German Cano however managed to control. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Vinny Junior in the 76th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Óscar Cordoba saved Sporting de Gijón from getting behind. In the 80th minute German Cano shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Óscar Cordoba saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 80 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goal looked a bit too open when German Cano came free, but Óscar Cordoba reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The Marquês de Herval fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-2. The final whistle blew with the score still tied, and both teams left the pitch thinking about the missed chances that could have given their team the win.
