Fernandão Recife fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 13th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Branislav Velchevski having to interfere. Elpidio Francis scored 0-2 in the 26th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Ronaldo Medeiros, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Elpidio Francis's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Ronaldo Medeiros read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 46th minute of play. After the first half ESTUDIANTES de la PLATA were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Luisito Antequera might have been able to make a better finish in the 52nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Branislav Velchevski. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Luisito Antequera ran back to his position shaking his head. Elpidio Francis received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 57th minute. Ronaldo Medeiros tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. ESTUDIANTES de la PLATA's André Monclús was substituted for Miguel Prosperi.
