Cristian Sancho struck a weak shot in the 9th minute. Lorenz Ureta didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Ecuador. In the 12th minute, Daniel Zorita made a precise shot to the right of Lorenz Ureta. Ajax Colombiano's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. Lorenz Ureta took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cristian Sancho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After a defensive mix-up in Ecuador's zone, Ivon Gasca stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Julio Vera came out of the goal and Ivon Gasca tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 22 minutes into the game, Cristian Sancho cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-2. Lorenz Ureta was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. After 27 minutes Ecuador's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Dimitri Payet who took care of the corner kick. The corner led Ajax Colombiano's Ivon Gasca to fire away a dangerous shot which Julio Vera despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Julio Vera made a fantastic save in the 30th minute, when Amado Ba sent off a good shot on target. After some fancy dribbling in the 33rd minute, Agustín Saelices managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ecuador's supporters rose to their feet, but Agustín Saelices was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Lorenz Ureta breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 39th minute, Ajax Colombiano's Baba Ba dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 2-2. Julio Vera stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Baba Ba's shot from short distance in the 43rd minute. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 45th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The score stood at 2-2 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Daniel Zorita to make the kick off. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cristian Sancho got free with Lorenz Ureta in the 53rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Ajax Colombiano's Hector Ferman was substituted for Pudes Checa. After 59 minutes Ajax Colombiano's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Daniel Zorita who took care of the corner kick. Lorenz Ureta made an important save on a dangerous shot by Agustín Saelices in the 61st minute. 67 minutes into the match, Ajax Colombiano's goalkeeper Lorenz Ureta had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Felix Montenegro. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Baba Ba, who was totally free with the ball in the 68th minute. Ecuador's Cristian Sancho got a good chance for a goal in the 93rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 95 minutes into the game, Antonio Arias was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Ecuador's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Ajax Colombiano the free kick.
