An unexpectedly hard shot by Luis Andino in the 27th minute of play forced Marquês de Herval's goalkeeper Dida Taffarel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Dida Taffarel took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cristian Sancho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Agustín Saelices sent away a hard shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Alfredo Martins could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 35th minute of the match, but Julio Vera made a huge save. 36 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Nestor Paraibano. The wind increased when Alfredo Martins made the kick off in the second half. Selami Rezan took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 70th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Julio Vera. Ecuador's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. 75 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Nestor Paraibano came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.
