But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Jose Correa couldn't finish the play. In the 13th minute Tomas Illescas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Giorgi Mamardashvili saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Jonathan Ferrant made a fantastic save in the 17th minute, when Laércio Torres sent off a good shot on target. Laércio Torres received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Jonathan Ferrant came out and tried to block the shot, but Laércio Torres slotted it home off the left post making it 1-0 in the 17th minute. Jonathan Ferrant didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Laércio Torres went, in the 24th minute, to the upper right corner, 2-0 was the resulting score. Tomas Illescas struck a weak shot in the 30th minute. Giorgi Mamardashvili didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Venezuela. Giorgi Mamardashvili showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Tomas Illescas in the 37th minute of the match. Laércio Torres in the 40thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Jonathan Ferrant, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. Tomas Illescas sent away a hard shot on goal in the 41st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 3-0 at half-time.

Jonathan Ferrant took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Romário MacAlister, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Patricio Costa fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 62nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Giorgi Mamardashvili having to interfere.
