A wasted opportunity for Club Deportes Santa Cruz. Ecuador's Felix Montenegro got a good chance for a goal in the 9th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Felix Montes received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 11th minute. Ilkka Markkula tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After taking down the ball on Club Deportes Santa Cruz's corner Eduardo Elia fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Julio Vera quite easily take care of the ball. In the 20th minute, Club Deportes Santa Cruz's Marcus Edström dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 1-0. 25 minutes into the game, Club Deportes Santa Cruz's Eusebiu Tunar nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Julio Vera made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 2-0. Marcus Edström's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Julio Vera read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 36th minute of play. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 4-0.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Marcus Edström to strike the kick off in the second half. Julio Vera stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Marcus Edström's shot from short distance in the 54th minute.
