Venezuela's Jonathan Ferrant played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bray McJon in the 11th minute of play. 18 minutes into the match, Venezuela's Tomas Illescas sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Ronaldo Medeiros narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Bray McJon did some fancy footwork in front of goal and succeeded to deceive the defenders so he could slam the ball in 1-0 to the left of a surprised Jonathan Ferrant 20 minutes into the match. In the 28th minute, Bray McJon got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Montevideo's zone, Tomas Illescas stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Ronaldo Medeiros came out of the goal and Tomas Illescas tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Tomas Illescas's late challenge caught a Montevideo's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Tomas Illescas helped the player get up and apologised. Tomas Illescas hit a great freekick 34 minutes into the match. In the 39th minute, Mário Maranhense hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 42nd minute, Venezuela's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Luisito Antequera fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Tomas Illescas was the one to do the kick off.
