An unexpectedly hard shot by Alfredo Martins in the 88th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 91st minute, German Cano left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Marquês de Herval fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 4-2. After a defensive mix-up in Marquês de Herval's zone, Cristian Sancho stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Dida Taffarel came out of the goal and Cristian Sancho tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Many of Ecuador's supporters were seen to leave the ground early as it became clear their team was going to lose. Ecuador may have spent more time on the ball, but Marquês de Herval were more willing to take their chances and they walked away with the win.
