Eladio Elizondo made in the 10th minute of the game a quick throw-in and Ramon Mena immediately put the ball in play. Kerry Flöter received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 12th minute. Mirko Vervoort tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Omar Volio showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Tony Montana, who was totally free with the ball in the 21st minute. In the 25thth minute of the game Tony Montana who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but U21 Costa Rica's Omar Volio was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Omar Volio made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Tony Montana in the 29th minute of play. Tony Montana might have been able to make a better finish in the 32nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Omar Volio. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Tony Montana ran back to his position shaking his head. Omar Volio took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tony Montana, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-3.

The wind increased when Tony Montana made the kick off in the second half. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ed Seinstra in the 54th minute of play forced U21 Costa Rica's goalkeeper Omar Volio to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball.
