The audience thought a goal was coming when Darwin Núñez got free with Julio Vera in the 23rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. If Cristian Sancho had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 25th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The supporters of Merengue FC booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 29 match minutes in a wonderful position. Felix Montes didn't get a good kick on the ball. 31 minutes in the game, Aquiles Urtsin fired away an excellent shot, which passed to the side of the right post without Julio Vera having to interfere. 33 minutes into the match, Ecuador's Cristian Sancho sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Bayan Gugovski narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Daniel Zorita's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Bayan Gugovski read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 35th minute of play. In the 38th minute the ball was on its way in behind Merengue FC's goalkeeper Bayan Gugovski, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Bayan Gugovski showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Daniel Zorita in the 40th minute of the match. 45 minutes into the game, Daniel Zorita cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Bayan Gugovski was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. After the first half Ecuador were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

An unexpectedly hard shot by Darwin Núñez in the 58th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Ismael Frances blasted a shot towards the goal in the 64th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Julio Vera having to make a save.
