Eloy Hats's late challenge caught a Uruguay's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Eloy Hats helped the player get up and apologised. In the 3rd match minute, Sporting Clube de Gaya was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Eloy Hats to maneuver through the defense. After a defensive mix-up in Sporting Clube de Gaya's zone, Alberto Gisbert stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Renato Vargas came out of the goal and Alberto Gisbert tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 6th match minute, Sporting Clube de Gaya was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Eloy Hats to maneuver through the defense. Renato Vargas showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Francisco Seco, who was totally free with the ball in the 9th minute. Uruguay's Joaquin Gayoso proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 13th minute of the match, managed to save Uruguay from getting a goal against them. Paulino Maltez struck a weak shot in the 18th minute. Joaquin Gayoso didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Sporting Clube de Gaya. Joaquin Gayoso was out of position in the 21 minute of play, and Fredy Montero capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Fredy Montero really showed his touch with that goal: 1-0. Mustapha Hadji made in the 33rd minute of the game a quick throw-in and Eloy Hats immediately put the ball in play. In the 36th match minute, Sporting Clube de Gaya was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Paulino Maltez to maneuver through the defense. After some fancy dribbling in the 41st minute, Lucílio Figueiras managed to get in a good position for a shot. Sporting Clube de Gaya's supporters rose to their feet, but Lucílio Figueiras was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Joaquin Gayoso breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. 42 minutes into the game, Mustapha Hadji threw the ball into play from the sideline. Uruguay's Alberto Gisbert quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Renato Vargas made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Francisco Seco in the 45th minute of play. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

Maximiliano Escribano fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 53rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Renato Vargas having to interfere. Lucílio Figueiras sent away a hard shot on goal in the 55th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 56th minute, Alberto Gisbert hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 57th minute Lucílio Figueiras shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Joaquin Gayoso saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With a little luck, Sporting Clube de Gaya's Renato Vargas got control of the ball when Francisco Seco tried to sneak it across the goal line. Renato Vargas made an important save on a dangerous shot by Maximiliano Escribano in the 70th minute. Uruguay's Joaquin Gayoso played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Paulino Maltez in the 74th minute of play. Luis Figo kicked well hit freekick during the 75th minute of the match. In the 76th minute, Mustapha Hadji hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Uruguay's Joaquin Gayoso played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Lucílio Figueiras in the 80th minute of play. If Maximiliano Escribano had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 81st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 83 minutes of play, Sporting Clube de Gaya's Paulino Maltez made it 3-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Joaquin Gayoso was left in no man's land by his defense there! Joaquin Gayoso stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Paulino Maltez's shot from short distance in the 86th minute. The audience thought a goal was coming when Maximiliano Escribano got free with Renato Vargas in the 95th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The Sporting Clube de Gaya players were eager to celebrate when the final whistle sounded. They had somehow managed to win, even though the away team had held the majority of the possession.
