In the 25th minute Roman Biehlert shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Nilton Varela saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Frank Borges could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 29th minute of the match, but Dariusz Wieberneit made a huge save. In the 31st minute the ball was on its way in behind Academica Pulheim's goalkeeper Dariusz Wieberneit, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. After 44 minutes of play, Academica Pulheim's Noel Schaffert made it 0-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Nilton Varela was left in no man's land by his defense there! The São Paulo Leste F.C. players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Academica Pulheim were winning 0-2.

Nilton Varela showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Noel Schaffert in the 84th minute of the match. If Frank Borges had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 89th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After some fancy dribbling in the 97th minute, Noel Schaffert managed to get in a good position for a shot. Academica Pulheim's supporters rose to their feet, but Noel Schaffert was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Nilton Varela breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
