Fred Mendonça sent away a hard shot on goal in the 19th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. An unexpectedly hard shot by Fred Mendonça in the 22nd minute of play forced Villaverde Celeste Clube's goalkeeper Augusto Fernandez to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Tipper Mulvihill fell near the penalty area in the 23rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Hamburg City Vampires's protests and gave Tipper Mulvihill a yellow card for diving instead. Giuliano David took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 24th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Eugeniusz Tyski. Hamburg City Vampires's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. When Kurt Döbele fell near the penalty area in the 27th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Hamburg City Vampires's protests and gave Kurt Döbele a yellow card for diving instead. After 27 played minutes Hamburg City Vampires got a freekick which was hit by Kurt Döbele. Eugeniusz Tyski showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Frank Sten, who was totally free with the ball in the 29th minute. Hamburg City Vampires's Eugeniusz Tyski played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cido Furlan in the 35th minute of play. The referee felt a red card was in order, 37 minutes into the game, when Armandinho Xavier put in a rough tackle. After 36 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Villaverde Celeste Clube! Augusto Fernandez made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Kurt Döbele in the 41st minute of play. In the 42nd match minute, Hamburg City Vampires was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Marc Hooiveld to maneuver through the defense. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-0 at half-time.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Mané Garrincha was the one to do the kick off. Augusto Fernandez took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Fred Mendonça, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After having played for 59 minutes, Luís Paulo Perez managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Villaverde Celeste Clube's supporters crossed their fingers, but Luís Paulo Perez was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 66 minutes into the match, Hamburg City Vampires's goalkeeper Eugeniusz Tyski had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Mané Garrincha. Fred Mendonça's late challenge caught a Villaverde Celeste Clube's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Fred Mendonça helped the player get up and apologised. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Fred Mendonça in the 75th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Augusto Fernandez prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 76th match minute, Villaverde Celeste Clube was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Alberto Valladares to maneuver through the defense. Frank Sten kicked well hit freekick during the 79th minute of the match. After a rather tough play, Villaverde Celeste Clube's Denílson de Souza got a free kick in the 82nd minute. In the 83rd minute, Giuliano David hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. A collision led to Hamburg City Vampires getting a freekick after 85 minutes play. Ivica Lufen hit a great ball. After a rather tough play, Hamburg City Vampires's Orest Bubniv got a free kick in the 94th minute. The supporters of Villaverde Celeste Clube booed when Hamburg City Vampires was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 95 match minutes in a wonderful position. Reinhard Borkmann didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 96th minute, Mané Garrincha got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The Hamburg City Vampires support was delighted with a win in a match that could easily have ended differently.
