In the 17th minute Tomas Illescas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Silvano Fragoso saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The crowd rose to their feet as Fridun Schwemer kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Jonathan Ferrant. That made the score 1-0 in the 22 minute of play. A collision led to Benfica de Penafirme getting a freekick after 24 minutes play. Varban Tzúrkov hit a great ball. Tomas Illescas sent away a hard shot on goal in the 25th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Tomas Illescas in the 27th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Silvano Fragoso saved Benfica de Penafirme from getting behind. When the match had gone on for 29 minutes, Raúl Cruz put it in 2-0 from a short distance just to the right of Jonathan Ferrant. With a little luck, Venezuela's Jonathan Ferrant got control of the ball when Raúl Cruz tried to sneak it across the goal line. The supporters of Benfica de Penafirme booed when Venezuela was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 46 match minutes in a wonderful position. Tomas Illescas didn't get a good kick on the ball. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

Jo Soares's late challenge caught a Venezuela's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. The audience was convinced that Tomas Illescas's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Silvano Fragoso was relentless in the 90th minute of the game.
