Alonso Berganza was in a good position and managed to take a shot, but he missed just to the outside of the post. Rolando Noboa made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ümit Karan in the 10th minute of play. Peru's Rolando Noboa played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ümit Karan in the 10th minute of play. Laurențiu Roşculeţ scored 1-1 in the 37th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Rolando Noboa, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Arnauld Van Impe could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 39th minute of the match, but Rolando Noboa made a huge save. Waud Huijbrechts hit a great freekick 42 minutes into the match. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Julian Murillo to make the kick off. With a little luck, Brugge United's Vítor Baia got control of the ball when Luz Tejedor tried to sneak it across the goal line.
