Sport Clube Recife's Percy Fernandez played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Felix Montenegro in the 18th minute of play. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Doctor Strange, who was totally free with the ball in the 20th minute. In the 28th minute of the match Ecuador got a corner. Sport Clube Recife's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Daniel Zorita ran over to the corner to take the kick. After 32 played minutes Sport Clube Recife got a freekick which was hit by Remo Carvalho. 34 minutes into the match, Sport Clube Recife's goal looked a bit too open when Luis Andino came free, but Percy Fernandez reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 35 minutes had been played when some careless play by Sport Clube Recife's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Daniel Zorita was slow to take the kick. During this time Ecuador's players had a chance to rest. In the 38th match minute, Ecuador was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Camilo Gisbert to maneuver through the defense. An unexpectedly hard shot by Pablo Lampard in the 38th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The throw-in from Camilo Gisbert in the 68th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Sport Clube Recife's Knut Söderström. Camilo Gisbert made in the 69th minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Luis Andino. After 71 played minutes Ecuador got a freekick which was hit by Agustín Saelices. Gualter Penha took the ball and in the 72 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Julio Vera. Julio Vera dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. Percy Fernandez made a fantastic save in the 75th minute, when Daniel Zorita sent off a good shot on target. Sport Clube Recife's Marco Tardelli managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Camilo Gisbert in the 76 minute of the game. 77 minutes into the match, Sport Clube Recife's Gualter Penha sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Julio Vera narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 81st minute Gualter Penha shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Ecuador's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Daniel Zorita in the 95th minute. Daniel Zorita made a great header on Ecuador's corner, it was just that Sport Clube Recife's Percy Fernandez managed to reach the ball for a save. Despite being the better team, Ecuador failed to find the winning goal and were forced to settle for a single point.
