The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Daniel Zorita blasted a shot towards the goal in the 14th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Bartosz Skikiewicz having to make a save. 16 minutes into the match, Bucaneiros's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Sancho came free, but Bartosz Skikiewicz reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Bartosz Skikiewicz showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Luis Andino, who was totally free with the ball in the 18th minute. Ahmet Reha Zeren kicked well hit freekick during the 18th minute of the match. After a rather tough play, Ecuador's Luis Andino got a free kick in the 21st minute. With an all-out effort, Bucaneiros's Julio Vera threw himself towards the right post 25 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Ernest Spoelbergs, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Ernest Spoelbergs stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After 50 played minutes, Bucaneiros's Laércio Travassos shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Julio Vera came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Bucaneiros reached it. Mai Hontoria's late challenge caught a Ecuador's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Mai Hontoria helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Ecuador booed when Bucaneiros was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 52 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mai Hontoria didn't get a good kick on the ball. Bucaneiros's Mario Kempes was substituted for Mai Hontoria. Bucaneiros's Matteo La Forest was substituted for Clodoaldo á Borg. A collision led to Bucaneiros getting a freekick after 56 minutes play. Eusébio Bastos hit a great ball. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Mario Kempes, who was totally free with the ball in the 59th minute. Bucaneiros's Bartosz Skikiewicz proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 65th minute of the match, managed to save Bucaneiros from getting a goal against them. Felix Montenegro sent away a hard shot on goal in the 66th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Julio Vera didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Mario Kempes went, in the 90th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-0 was the resulting score. Julio Vera showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Mario Kempes in the 95th minute of the match. Ecuador's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
