In the 13th minute Alberto Tafalla shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Nery Pumpido saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. When Leonardo Leoz fell near the penalty area in the 14th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Mexico's protests and gave Leonardo Leoz a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to Mexico getting a freekick after 14 minutes play. Leonardo Leoz hit a great ball. GuateFortín's Severo Rameriz was substituted for Stanyo Búnkov. 18 minutes into the match, GuateFortín's goal looked a bit too open when Joel Gaona came free, but Nery Pumpido reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Facundo Cadaval in the 20th minute of play forced GuateFortín's goalkeeper Nery Pumpido to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The tension between the GuateFortín and the Mexico players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 36 played minutes GuateFortín got a freekick which was hit by Máximo Perrone. 38 minutes had been played when some careless play by GuateFortín's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Joel Gaona was slow to take the kick. During this time Mexico's players had a chance to rest. When GuateFortín's William Villanueva in the 42nd minute got a chance for a shot 42nd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie.
