With an all-out effort, Sporting Clube de Gaya's Marcos Cotilla threw himself towards the right post 15 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Luis Figo, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. After having played for 20 minutes, Fredy Montero managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Sporting Clube de Gaya's supporters crossed their fingers, but Fredy Montero was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Marcos Cotilla showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Paulino Maltez, who was totally free with the ball in the 29th minute. Marcos Cotilla came out and tried to block the shot, but Fredy Montero slotted it home off the left post making it 2-0 in the 42nd minute. Marcos Cotilla showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Paulino Maltez, who was totally free with the ball in the 46th minute. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

A collision led to Panama getting a freekick after 52 minutes play. Isidoro Sarmiento hit a great ball. Sporting Clube de Gaya's Renato Vargas played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Isidoro Sarmiento in the 56th minute of play. When Paulino Maltez fell near the penalty area in the 60th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Sporting Clube de Gaya's protests and gave Paulino Maltez a yellow card for diving instead. Paulino Maltez hit a great freekick 60 minutes into the match. 62 minutes in the game, Tomas Berganza dribbled his way through the penalty area and after maneuvering past an opponent, drilled a quick shot at the goal. The ball looked like it was going in, but it was hit a bit too hard and flew over the goal. Aaron Barrios's late challenge caught a Sporting Clube de Gaya's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Aaron Barrios helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to Panama getting a freekick after 64 minutes play. Aaron Barrios hit a great ball. If Isidoro Sarmiento had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 68th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. After 72 played minutes Sporting Clube de Gaya got a freekick which was hit by Luis Figo. The supporters of Panama booed when Sporting Clube de Gaya was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 73 match minutes in a wonderful position. Eloy Hats didn't get a good kick on the ball.
