René Higuita took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Luis Andino, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The corner went over the outstretched arms of ᗩɦmeɗo ᎥᏦᎥ Göȥüm's goalie and right to Felix Montenegro. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. ᗩɦmeɗo ᎥᏦᎥ Göȥüm's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Thoralf Banke in the 45th minute of play. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 46th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. The score stood at 1-1 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

Julio Vera stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Thoralf Banke's shot from short distance in the 81st minute. Daniel Zorita could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 83rd minute of the match, but René Higuita made a huge save. Felix Montenegro could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 92nd minute of the match, but René Higuita made a huge save. Ecuador were clearly unhappy with the draw, as they felt they had done enough to earn themselves a victory.
