Benito Sanz didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Cristiano Barbosa went, in the 10th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-0 was the resulting score. Cotinguiba Esporte Clube-'s Éder Guimarães got a good chance for a goal in the 13th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Benito Sanz didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Cristiano Barbosa went, in the 14th minute, to the upper right corner, 2-0 was the resulting score. A collision led to Costa Rica getting a freekick after 17 minutes play. Aaron Alcocer hit a great ball. After 19 minutes of play, Cotinguiba Esporte Clube-'s Gorka Mendieta made it 3-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Benito Sanz was left in no man's land by his defense there! Cristiano Barbosa sent away a hard shot on goal in the 21st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Costa Rica's Benito Sanz proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 27th minute of the match, managed to save Costa Rica from getting a goal against them. After 29th play minutes Gorka Mendieta shot 4-0, a short shot which went by Benito Sanz and just under the crossbar into goal. If Éder Guimarães had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 32nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After some careless play in the Costa Rica defense, Gorka Mendieta kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Benito Sanz. The Costa Rica fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Benito Sanz should have stopped the shot. After 45 played minutes Costa Rica got a freekick which was hit by Efrain Moruga. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Gorka Mendieta in the 47th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Benito Sanz saved Costa Rica from getting behind.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Axel Tasis made a kick off.
