The supporters of Peru booed when GuateFortín was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 44 match minutes in a wonderful position. Máximo Perrone didn't get a good kick on the ball. Nery Pumpido took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Julian Murillo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 1-2 lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Julian Murillo was the one to do the kick off. Nery Pumpido showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Eliseo Mina, who was totally free with the ball in the 51st minute. Thierry Henry took the ball and in the 53 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Rolando Noboa. Rolando Noboa dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-2. Nery Pumpido took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Luz Tejedor, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Luz Tejedor was slow to take the kick. During this time Peru's players had a chance to rest. Nery Pumpido showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Eliseo Mina in the 78th minute of the match. Rolando Noboa stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of William Villanueva's shot from short distance in the 84th minute. William Villanueva sent away a hard shot on goal in the 86th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Peru made a substitution. Eliseo Alcocer replaced Moises Gayoso. Peru's Rafael Gallo was substituted for Julian Murillo. Nery Pumpido made a fantastic save in the 89th minute, when Rafael Gallo sent off a good shot on target. In the 91stth minute of the game William Villanueva who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Peru's Rolando Noboa was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Thierry Henry's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Rolando Noboa read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 96th minute of play. Peru were clearly unhappy with the draw, as they felt they had done enough to earn themselves a victory.
