Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Danijel Petrlin ran back to his position shaking his head. Benito Sanz made a fantastic save in the 5th minute, when Danijel Petrlin sent off a good shot on target. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Danijel Petrlin in the 8th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Benito Sanz prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Adam Dodaj made a great header on Maksimir's corner, it was just that Costa Rica's Benito Sanz managed to reach the ball for a save. In the 14th minute, Danijel Petrlin ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Benito Sanz was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-0. With a little luck, Costa Rica's Benito Sanz got control of the ball when Antonio Hrste tried to sneak it across the goal line. The ball went over the crossbar instead. After some fancy dribbling in the 24th minute, Axel Tasis managed to get in a good position for a shot. Costa Rica's supporters rose to their feet, but Axel Tasis was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Antonio Križanec breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Antonio Hrste could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 26th minute of the match, but Benito Sanz made a huge save. 27 minutes into the game, Abel Carballo was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Costa Rica's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Maksimir the free kick. When the match clock showed 37 minutes, the score became 4-1 when Danijel Petrlin sped through Costa Rica's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Benito Sanz. 40 minutes into the game, Efrain Moruga threw the ball into play from the sideline. Maksimir's Gradimir Antonić quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. In the 42nd match minute, Costa Rica was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Efrain Moruga to maneuver through the defense. Benito Sanz didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Danijel Petrlin went, in the 44th minute, to the upper right corner, 5-1 was the resulting score. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

Costa Rica's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Adam Dodaj ran over to the corner to take the kick. Benito Sanz showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Adrijan Grbović, who was totally free with the ball in the 74th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Antonio Hrste in the 76th minute of play forced Costa Rica's goalkeeper Benito Sanz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball.
