Uruguay's Joaquin Gayoso played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ni Zhen Ying in the 7th minute of play. Joaquin Gayoso showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Herbert Holmgren, who was totally free with the ball in the 11th minute. In the 12th minute Francisco Seco shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Marcos Basso saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 18th minute The Shadows were awarded a corner. Ni Zhen Ying went to the cornerflag to take it. The corner led The Shadows's Ni Zhen Ying to fire away a dangerous shot which Joaquin Gayoso despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Herbert Holmgren got free with Joaquin Gayoso in the 22nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 23rd minute The Shadows were awarded a corner. Ni Zhen Ying went to the cornerflag to take it. Ni Zhen Ying made a great header on The Shadows's corner, it was just that Uruguay's Joaquin Gayoso managed to reach the ball for a save. Uruguay's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave The Shadows the free kick. After 46 played minutes Uruguay got a freekick which was hit by Francisco Seco. Uruguay's Joaquin Gayoso proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 48th minute of the match, managed to save Uruguay from getting a goal against them. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Niklas Lundqvist to make the kick off. In the 51st minute the ball was on its way in behind Uruguay's goalkeeper Joaquin Gayoso, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar.
