Deportivo Balvanera's Abel Neron played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristian Sancho in the 11th minute of play. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Felix Montenegro in the 16th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Abel Neron prevented the ball from getting in the gole. After 20 minutes, Marciano Koldobika mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Deportivo Balvanera and the Ecuador players grew even worse after the yellow card. Abel Neron made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-3. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Abel Neron took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristian Sancho in the 45th minute of play forced Deportivo Balvanera's goalkeeper Abel Neron to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 48 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Severiano Taurino came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-3 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Diego Milito to make the kick off. In the 51st minute, Daniel Zorita fired away a shot on goal. Daniel Zorita was slow to take the kick. During this time Ecuador's players had a chance to rest. Cristian Sancho made a great header on Ecuador's corner, it was just that Deportivo Balvanera's Abel Neron managed to reach the ball for a save.
