Hilario Ubendu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Erkan Fostiropoulos, who was totally free with the ball in the 11th minute. After 15 minutes, Sandu Alexa mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Rot-Weiss-Essen and the Gimnasia y tiro players grew even worse after the yellow card. The supporters of Gimnasia y tiro booed when Rot-Weiss-Essen was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 15 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sandu Alexa didn't get a good kick on the ball. Adam Northe made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Gavino Odilon in the 31st minute of play. In the 33rd minute, Miguel Arixo got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 34th minute, Gimnasia y tiro's Bernardo Mingo dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 3-0. Hilario Ubendu showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Sandu Alexa in the 38th minute of the match. Hilario Ubendu took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Sandu Alexa, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Rot-Weiss-Essen's Adam Northe proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 40th minute of the match, managed to save Rot-Weiss-Essen from getting a goal against them. After having played for 42 minutes, Miguel Arixo managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Gimnasia y tiro's supporters crossed their fingers, but Miguel Arixo was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 3-0.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Miguel Arixo to strike the kick off in the second half. If Fabian Krinke had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 51st minute.
