The supporters of Rot-Weiss-Essen booed when Palermo AFC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 2 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hugo Pitin didn't get a good kick on the ball. Domingo Serafo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Björn Mokros in the 5th minute of play. 6 minutes into the match, Palermo AFC's goal looked a bit too open when Erkan Fostiropoulos came free, but Domingo Serafo reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 6th minute, Erkan Fostiropoulos left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Rot-Weiss-Essen fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. After 8 played minutes Rot-Weiss-Essen got a freekick which was hit by Ebbo Böse. In the 13th minute Elvio Olo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Uwe Ziege saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Domingo Serafo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Erkan Fostiropoulos in the 15th minute of play. In the 15th minute, Erkan Fostiropoulos ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Domingo Serafo was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. 21 minutes into the game, Rot-Weiss-Essen's Erkan Fostiropoulos nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Domingo Serafo made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-3. In the 26th match minute, Palermo AFC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Hugo Pitin to maneuver through the defense. An unexpectedly hard shot by Björn Mokros in the 29th minute of play forced Palermo AFC's goalkeeper Domingo Serafo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 31 minutes into the match, Sandu Alexa had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Domingo Serafo. Palermo AFC's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Sandu Alexa was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-4. Uwe Ziege made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Elvio Olo in the 37th minute of play. 38 minutes had been played when some careless play by Rot-Weiss-Essen's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Elvio Olo was slow to take the kick. During this time Palermo AFC's players had a chance to rest. Domingo Serafo showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sandu Alexa, who was totally free with the ball in the 44th minute. Uwe Ziege made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Florencio Fix in the 45th minute of play. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-4 lead.

After a rather tough play, Rot-Weiss-Essen's Maurizio Brink got a free kick in the 53rd minute. A collision led to Rot-Weiss-Essen getting a freekick after 55 minutes play. Gunther Schößler hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Björn Mokros in the 59th minute of play forced Palermo AFC's goalkeeper Domingo Serafo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 59th minute, Anselmo Astudillo hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The audience thought a goal was coming when Maurizio Brink got free with Domingo Serafo in the 63rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 65th minute Florencio Fix shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Uwe Ziege saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 66 minutes Rot-Weiss-Essen's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Elvio Olo who took care of the corner kick. Domingo Serafo was out of position in the 68 minute of play, and Erkan Fostiropoulos capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Erkan Fostiropoulos really showed his touch with that goal: 0-5. After 72 played minutes Palermo AFC got a freekick which was hit by Blas Obano. After having played for 72 minutes, Erkan Fostiropoulos managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Rot-Weiss-Essen's supporters crossed their fingers, but Erkan Fostiropoulos was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 75 minutes into the match, Rot-Weiss-Essen's goal looked a bit too open when Florencio Fix came free, but Uwe Ziege reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Hugo Pitin hit a great freekick 81 minutes into the match. After some careless play in the Palermo AFC defense, Sandu Alexa kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Domingo Serafo. The Palermo AFC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Domingo Serafo should have stopped the shot. 88 minutes into the game, Erkan Fostiropoulos cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-7. Domingo Serafo was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The Palermo AFC supporters were disappointed that their team didn't take anything from the match, despite matching Rot-Weiss-Essen's performance. The match ended with a win for Rot-Weiss-Essen.
