Spectators: 7530 (Terracing: 5649, Seating: 1731, VIP seats: 150) Dark clouds were building up when the players entered the field. None of the them looked very eager to play. Ingvar Bollström started the match with the kick off. Benoit Elzen charged in rather forcefully in the 2nd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Benoit Elzen the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 2nd match minute, FC Bruges was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Benoit Elzen to maneuver through the defense. In the 3rd minute Ingvar Bollström shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Tony Van Der Weghen saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Oldham Athletic were awarded a corner in the 5th minute after FC Bruges's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Jan Gulliksson took the corner. The corner led to Oldham Athletic's Leif Vedholm getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. Sonny Bergdal made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Tony Henderickx in the 7th minute of play. After 16th play minutes Agne Stor shot 1-0, a short shot which went by Tony Van Der Weghen and just under the crossbar into goal. 20 minutes into the game, Leif Vedholm was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Oldham Athletic's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave FC Bruges the free kick. Tony Van Der Weghen showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ingvar Bollström, who was totally free with the ball in the 23rd minute. With a little luck, FC Bruges's Tony Van Der Weghen got control of the ball when Leif Vedholm tried to sneak it across the goal line. Tony Van Der Weghen stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Ingvar Bollström's shot from short distance in the 29th minute. In the 42nd minute, Per-Arne Nyberg hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The supporters of FC Bruges booed when Oldham Athletic was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 45 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hubert Backlund didn't get a good kick on the ball. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Tony Henderickx stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jan Gulliksson in the 51st minute of play forced FC Bruges's goalkeeper Tony Van Der Weghen to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 55th match minute, Oldham Athletic was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Oscar Bäcklin to maneuver through the defense. Oldham Athletic made a substitution. Karl-Erik Fransson replaced Sören Petersson. Oldham Athletic's Per-Erik Rydberg was substituted for Agne Stor. Oscar Bäcklin kicked well hit freekick during the 57th minute of the match. After 59 played minutes FC Bruges got a freekick which was hit by Richy Wiggers. Tony Van Der Weghen showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jan Gulliksson in the 60th minute of the match. Oldham Athletic's Sonny Bergdal proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 63rd minute of the match, managed to save Oldham Athletic from getting a goal against them. The referee felt a red card was in order, 65 minutes into the game, when Richy Wiggers put in a rough tackle. Richy Wiggers hit a great freekick 66 minutes into the match. Tony Van Der Weghen made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Jan Gulliksson in the 67th minute of play. When Tony Henderickx fell near the penalty area in the 68th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored FC Bruges's protests and gave Tony Henderickx a yellow card for diving instead. In the 68th minute, one of FC Bruges:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for FC Bruges. In the 70th minute there was a penalty for Oldham Athletic. Ingvar Bollström stepped forward and shot the ball to the right of a diving Tony Van Der Weghen. 2-1. In the 73rd minute, Ingvar Bollström made a precise shot to the right of Tony Van Der Weghen. FC Bruges's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 3-1. Tony Van Der Weghen didn't succeed to prevent the ball from going into goal when Oldham Athletic's Ingvar Bollström shot an unexpected shot in the crossbar's under edge and made 4-1 in the ordered_time% minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Per-Erik Rydberg in the 84th minute of play forced FC Bruges's goalkeeper Tony Van Der Weghen to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Oscar Bäcklin received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 85th minute. Tony Van Der Weghen tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Tony Van Der Weghen came out of the goal in the 92nd minute to try and stop a shot by Oldham Athletic's Ingvar Bollström. But to his dismay, Ingvar Bollström quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 5-1. When Oldham Athletic's Ingvar Bollström in the 96th minute got a chance for a shot 96th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye FC Bruges's goalie prevented a goal. In the 97th minute, Per-Arne Nyberg got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Oldham Athletic's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
