The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 0-1 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. With a little luck, Guararapes's Luís Corrêa got control of the ball when Ingvar Bollström tried to sneak it across the goal line. When José Carlos Breckenfeld fell near the penalty area in the 10th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Guararapes's protests and gave José Carlos Breckenfeld a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to Guararapes getting a freekick after 10 minutes play. José Carlos Breckenfeld hit a great ball. Luís Corrêa didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Ingvar Bollström went, in the 12th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. Luís Corrêa made a fantastic save in the 16th minute, when Ingvar Bollström sent off a good shot on target. After a rather tough play, Guararapes's Dalmo Valladares got a free kick in the 17th minute. In the 21st minute the ball was on its way in behind Guararapes's goalkeeper Luís Corrêa, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Oldham Athletic's Sonny Bergdal played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Conrado Leite in the 30th minute of play. In the 32nd minute, Conrado Leite hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Luís Corrêa was out of position in the 34 minute of play, and Agne Stor capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Agne Stor really showed his touch with that goal: 2-2. Oscar Bäcklin received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 36th minute. Luís Corrêa tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 39th minute Jonathan de Azevedo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sonny Bergdal saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Nilton Secco in the 43rd minute of play forced Oldham Athletic's goalkeeper Sonny Bergdal to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Sonny Bergdal took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jonathan de Azevedo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The Guararapes fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-4. After having played for 69 minutes, Karl-Erik Fransson managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Oldham Athletic's supporters crossed their fingers, but Karl-Erik Fransson was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal.
