S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Marko Norström was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. Vitinho Moreira hit a great freekick 11 minutes into the match. The supporters of S.E.R. Caxias do Sul booed when Brothers of Mercy was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gustav Forssberg didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 23rd minute the ball was on its way in behind Brothers of Mercy's goalkeeper Karl-Erik Kihlman, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 27th minute, Joélson Paraibano hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 35 minutes into the match, Svante Pihlgren notched a goal, 0-2, to the right of S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's Gianluigi Donnarumma. Gianluigi Donnarumma was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Karl-Erik Kihlman came out of the goal in the 41st minute to try and stop a shot by S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's Leopoldo Sanches. But to his dismay, Leopoldo Sanches quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-2. In the 44th minute, Marko Norström hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 45th minute, Leopoldo Sanches reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Karl-Erik Kihlman. The goal made the score 2-2.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Svante Pihlgren was the one to do the kick off. Marko Norström's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 52ndth minute, Gianluigi Donnarumma skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. 54 minutes had been played when some careless play by S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Tobias Forssberg was slow to take the kick. During this time Brothers of Mercy's players had a chance to rest. In a very dangerous position, a player in S.E.R. Caxias do Sul fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 56th minute. Penalty! The goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, was totally fooled by Brothers of Mercy's Tobias Forssberg, who 57 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. With his leg Gianluigi Donnarumma managed to avoid a goal in the 63rdth minute, when Brothers of Mercy's Marko Norström fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Svante Pihlgren received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Gianluigi Donnarumma came out and tried to block the shot, but Svante Pihlgren slotted it home off the left post making it 2-4 in the 65th minute. After 69 played minutes Brothers of Mercy got a freekick which was hit by Tobias Forssberg. S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's Gianluigi Donnarumma proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 71st minute of the match, managed to save S.E.R. Caxias do Sul from getting a goal against them. Gianluigi Donnarumma made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Svante Pihlgren in the 74th minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 77th minute, Svante Pihlgren managed to get in a good position for a shot. Brothers of Mercy's supporters rose to their feet, but Svante Pihlgren was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Gianluigi Donnarumma breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's Gianluigi Donnarumma played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Anders Svensson in the 89th minute of play. If Marko Norström had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 91st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Tobias Forssberg hit a great freekick 96 minutes into the match. When the match was over Brothers of Mercy could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than S.E.R. Caxias do Sul throughout the match.
