The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. After 27 minutes, Albert Camus mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Grentino FC and the Catugi FC players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 28 played minutes Grentino FC got a freekick which was hit by Albert Camus. When Ernesto de Amaral fell near the penalty area in the 42nd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Catugi FC's protests and gave Ernesto de Amaral a yellow card for diving instead. In the 42nd minute, Ernesto de Amaral hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Grentino FC's Falcão Sampaio played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Fabiano Maranhense in the 47th minute of play. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Erasmo Simão to strike the kick off in the second half. After 55 minutes of play, Grentino FC's Gualter Sampaio made it 1-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Reko Nybacka was left in no man's land by his defense there! Fabiano Maranhense who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 58thth minute tested the skills of Falcão Sampaio when he managed to save the team from getting behind. A collision led to Catugi FC getting a freekick after 60 minutes play. Walmir Duarte hit a great ball. Reko Nybacka showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Joaquin Xacintu in the 64th minute of the match. After 67 played minutes Grentino FC got a freekick which was hit by Joaquin Xacintu. In the 81st minute Joaquin Xacintu shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Reko Nybacka saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 87 minutes into the match, Grentino FC's goal looked a bit too open when Carlos Alberto Soares came free, but Falcão Sampaio reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 88 played minutes Catugi FC got a freekick which was hit by Edson Couto. In the 92nd match minute, Grentino FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Froilan Calvino to maneuver through the defense. A hard shot by Vicente Valladares from long distance, 93 minutes into the match, got Falcão Sampaio's attention. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. Many of Catugi FC's supporters were seen to leave the ground early as it became clear their team was going to lose. Catugi FC may have spent more time on the ball, but Grentino FC were more willing to take their chances and they walked away with the win.
