With an extended leg and a bit of luck Mariano Echarriza prevented the ball from getting in the gole. An unexpectedly hard shot by Elazar Ocejo in the 17th minute of play forced Gençlerbirliği's goalkeeper Ali Reşit to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Venerando Eguizabal hit a great freekick 22 minutes into the match. If Gürbüz Kurceren had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 23rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Ali Reşit made a fantastic save in the 47th minute, when Zosimo Villalaud sent off a good shot on target. The score stood at 0-0 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Sufi Tayguner stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Alvarez Hergueta's late challenge caught a Gençlerbirliği's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card.
