He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Berenjenas de Punto Fijo reached it. An unexpectedly hard shot by Codruț Domuță in the 34th minute of play forced FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's goalkeeper Zafer Hürsel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Berenjenas de Punto Fijo were awarded a corner in the 37th minute after FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Dieter Denys took the corner. In the 43rd minute Juli Alvarez shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Zafer Hürsel saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The supporters of FC Zenit Saint Petersburg booed when Berenjenas de Punto Fijo was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 45 match minutes in a wonderful position. Zdzislaw Rakowski didn't get a good kick on the ball. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

Berenjenas de Punto Fijo's Thibaut Vandamme played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Håkan Kjellman in the 69th minute of play. Behram Vacit sent away a hard shot on goal in the 70th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Berenjenas de Punto Fijo made a substitution. Zadornin Puig replaced Alvaro Ramiréz. In the 76th minute, Gabriel Söderström hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After a rather tough play, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's Gabriel Söderström got a free kick in the 77th minute. Berenjenas de Punto Fijo's Thibaut Vandamme played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Emanuel Emander in the 80th minute of play. In the 82ndth minute of the game Emanuel Emander who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Berenjenas de Punto Fijo's Thibaut Vandamme was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After 87 minutes FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Dieter Denys who took care of the corner kick. James Bom was in a good position and managed to take a shot, but he missed just to the outside of the post. Codruț Domuță recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 94th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Neither team could find the winning goal during normal time. The second half finished 0-0. Extra-time would have to be played.

All the players looked a little tired when it was time for the first half of the overtime. It was FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's 徐默钢 that got to make the kick off. A sloppy throw-in by Charles Forsman in the 101st minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by Berenjenas de Punto Fijo's Alfredo Miliano. Thibaut Vandamme made a fantastic save in the 109th minute, when 徐默钢 sent off a good shot on target. Codruț Domuță might have been able to make a better finish in the 113th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Zafer Hürsel. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Codruț Domuță ran back to his position shaking his head. Both sets of players were looking tired when the whistle went to end the half. Everyone was pleased to get a few minutes to rest before extra-time resumed.

The players still looked rather fresh even though it was time for second half of the overtime. Codruț Domuță did a quick kick off. An unexpectedly hard shot by 徐默钢 in the 122nd minute of play forced Berenjenas de Punto Fijo's goalkeeper Thibaut Vandamme to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A collision led to FC Zenit Saint Petersburg getting a freekick after 124 minutes play. Hami Çerağ hit a great ball. Codruț Domuță received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 125th minute. Zafer Hürsel tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. With neither of the teams able to find a winning goal, the match would be decided by penalties!

The goalkeeper, Thibaut Vandamme, was totally fooled by FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's Jörgen Ekeroth, who 138 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. Thibaut Vandamme had in the 139thth minute some difficulties stopping Adolfo Gombal's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball.
