Sporting de Gijón's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Atilano Tonio was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-1. When the match clock showed 77 minutes, the score became 3-2 when Laureano Jon sped through Sporting de Gijón's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Óscar Cordoba. The audience thought a goal was coming when Venancio Emesto got free with Cristian Mergildo in the 82nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Matias Bilintx who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 87thth minute tested the skills of Cristian Mergildo when he managed to save the team from getting behind. LANUS fans cheered their team off the field, for while Sporting de Gijón had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
