Alcorcón's Belo Alvarez got a good chance for a goal in the 12th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Erlantz Bermejo in the 18th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Óscar Cordoba prevented the ball from getting in the gole. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Diego Maradona in the 21st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Maurino Serena saved A.D. Alcorcón from getting behind. A collision led to A.D. Alcorcón getting a freekick after 23 minutes play. Esteban Vadillos hit a great ball. Óscar Cordoba made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Belo Alvarez in the 28th minute of play. In the 33rd match minute, Sporting de Gijón was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Rune Fanström to maneuver through the defense. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-1.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Belo Alvarez stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. 52 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goalkeeper Óscar Cordoba had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Belo Alvarez. When Erlantz Bermejo came up free with the goalie in the 56th minute, the A.D. Alcorcón fans jumped to their feet. Sporting de Gijón's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Sporting de Gijón were really happy, having secured the victory after a very even contest.
