The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Fernanco Peso could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 4th minute of the match, but George Forsyth made a huge save. 12 minutes into the match, CD Municipal's goalkeeper George Forsyth had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Fernanco Peso. Sporting Cristal's Jon Iruegas played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Enrique Cassaretto in the 13th minute of play. A collision led to CD Municipal getting a freekick after 19 minutes play. Edelmiro Moise hit a great ball. CD Municipal's Yunus Mahşer quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Ivon Curiel, made in the 21st minute of the game. After 22 minutes of play, CD Municipal's Enrique Cassaretto made it 1-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Jon Iruegas was left in no man's land by his defense there! Hüseyin Turan Elçibey recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 29th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 32 minutes into the game, Mouricio Zuri threw the ball into play from the sideline. Sporting Cristal's Ludomil Kolba quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. If Fernanco Peso had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 37th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. George Forsyth showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Fernanco Peso, who was totally free with the ball in the 46th minute. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 2-1 at half-time.

In the 52nd minute Fernanco Peso shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but George Forsyth saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a rather tough play, CD Municipal's Aureliano Buendia got a free kick in the 56th minute. Mosen Colillas kicked well hit freekick during the 58th minute of the match. In the 59th minute of the match Ludomil Kolba sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but George Forsyth skillfully saved the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Enrique Cassaretto got free with Jon Iruegas in the 68th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. George Forsyth showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Fernanco Peso, who was totally free with the ball in the 73rd minute. 74 minutes into the match, Sporting Cristal's Fernanco Peso sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that George Forsyth narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The corner ended in Gertjan De Ryck almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but CD Municipal's George Forsyth did a great save. 84 minutes into the match, CD Municipal's goal looked a bit too open when Christian Luciano came free, but George Forsyth reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 88 minutes into the match, Sporting Cristal's goal looked a bit too open when Ryota Miyagi came free, but Jon Iruegas reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 94th minute, Ludomil Kolba hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 95th minute, Ryota Miyagi ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Jon Iruegas was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-3. The CD Municipal supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing CD Municipal would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
