The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Newell´s's Cristobal Estavan played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Benê Dantas in the 5th minute of play. 6 minutes into the match, Mattias Wallengren dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Delfim Proença, 1-0. Cristobal Estavan didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Fausto Alcântara went, in the 11th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. Tadeo Jakobe did some fancy footwork in front of goal and succeeded to deceive the defenders so he could slam the ball in 2-1 to the left of a surprised Delfim Proença 14 minutes into the match. 24 minutes into the match, Mattias Wallengren notched a goal, 5-1, to the right of Botafogo's Delfim Proença. Delfim Proença was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. In the 28th minute of the match Newell´s got a corner. Botafogo's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Indiana Turban ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Newell´s's Indiana Turban to fire away a dangerous shot which Delfim Proença despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Delfim Proença made a fantastic save in the 31st minute, when Tadeo Jakobe sent off a good shot on target. Delfim Proença was out of position in the 36 minute of play, and Omar Cordara capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Omar Cordara really showed his touch with that goal: 7-1. Tadeo Jakobe was extremely unlucky when he, in the 40th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. Delfim Proença showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Tadeo Jakobe in the 42nd minute of the match. After 45 minutes, Tadeo Jakobe made it 8-1 with a short kick to the right side. Botafogo's Delfim Proença tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Benê Dantas stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. 51 minutes into the game, Tadeo Jakobe cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 9-1. Delfim Proença was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Omar Cordara sent away a hard shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The audience was convinced that Mattias Wallengren's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Delfim Proença was relentless in the 57th minute of the game. In the 57th match minute, Newell´s was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Omar Cordara to maneuver through the defense. Delfim Proença came out of the goal in the 63rd minute to try and stop a shot by Newell´s's Mattias Wallengren. But to his dismay, Mattias Wallengren quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 11-1. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Mattias Wallengren in the 66th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Delfim Proença saved Botafogo from getting behind. Delfim Proença stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Mattias Wallengren's shot from short distance in the 69th minute. 70 minutes into the game, Mattias Wallengren cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 12-1. Delfim Proença was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Mattias Wallengren scored 14-1 in the 78th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Delfim Proença, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 82nd minute, Tadeo Jakobe ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Delfim Proença was frozen by the shot and now it was 15-1. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Tadeo Jakobe in the 87th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Delfim Proença saved Botafogo from getting behind. The Newell´s fans' excitement grew in the 87th match minute when Newell´s's Tadeo Jakobe looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 16-1 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. After some careless play in the Botafogo defense, Mattias Wallengren kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Delfim Proença. The Botafogo fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Delfim Proença should have stopped the shot. There was no doubt that Newell´s were the better team. Newell´s's players enjoyed the ovations of the crowd after the victory.
