A collision led to Matos Velhos getting a freekick after 16 minutes play. Tord Böcklund hit a great ball. 19 minutes into the match, Matos Velhos's Henrique Candal sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that David Bastos narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Vito de Godoi showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Nikos Christou in the 22nd minute of the match. Angelo Pessoa fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 30th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Vito de Godoi having to interfere. David Bastos made an important save on a dangerous shot by Júlio Gentil in the 33rd minute.
