With an extended leg and a bit of luck Óscar Cordoba prevented the ball from getting in the gole. After some careless play in the Sporting de Gijón defense, Gabriele Batistuta kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Óscar Cordoba. The Sporting de Gijón fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Óscar Cordoba should have stopped the shot. A hard shot by Saturnino Curcio from long distance, 42 minutes into the match, got Camilo Salvidor's attention. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. After 43 minutes, Uriel Gorri mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Menchu FC and the Sporting de Gijón players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 43 played minutes Menchu FC got a freekick which was hit by Uriel Gorri. After the first half Menchu FC were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The supporters of Menchu FC booed when Sporting de Gijón was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 50 match minutes in a wonderful position. Esteban Ekaitz didn't get a good kick on the ball. Camilo Salvidor showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Diego Maradona, who was totally free with the ball in the 66th minute. Gabriele Batistuta could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 68th minute of the match, but Óscar Cordoba made a huge save. 69 minutes into the match, Venancio Emesto notched a goal, 2-2, to the right of Menchu FC's Camilo Salvidor. Camilo Salvidor was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Sporting de Gijón made a substitution. Mario Zanabria replaced Saturnino Curcio. The audience thought a goal was coming when Gaston Firmo got free with Óscar Cordoba in the 90th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Menchu FC's Gaston Firmo was standing unmarked in front of the goal when he, in the 90th play minute, got the ball and easily drilled it into the goal. Menchu FC made a substitution. Silverio Sergi replaced Armando Roland. The Menchu FC supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Menchu FC would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
